Caroline E. Thomas, MD
Obstetrics & Gynecology“I want my patients to feel heard, listened to, and cared for,” she says. “Creating a connection is very important to me, and I never want a patient to feel like they can’t share their concerns or questions with me.” Caroline Thomas, MD
Caroline E. Thomas, MD, is an OB/GYN at the Short Pump location of Virginia Women’s Center. Dr. Thomas has always felt a deep calling to medicine. Her passion began early in her life when her younger brother was born with Down syndrome and later diagnosed with autism. Witnessing the care and dedication of the physicians who helped her brother overcome milestones that seemed impossible inspired Dr. Thomas to pursue a career in medicine. “I saw these doctors as real-life superheroes,” she recalls.
Though she initially thought she would go into pediatrics, Dr. Thomas found her true calling in women’s healthcare. Her involvement with volunteer groups and research in women’s health solidified her passion for empowering women to make informed decisions about their bodies. For Dr. Thomas, women’s healthcare is about building lasting relationships, guiding patients through life’s milestones, from adolescence through menopause, and being a trusted partner in their care.
During her residency, Dr. Thomas became known as the “contraception queen” for her expertise in counseling women on their options. She also spearheaded a menstrual product drive for women at a local shelter, raising nearly $2,000, and played a key role in creating a postpartum LARC initiative. Her commitment to patient education and advocacy extends to her work in gynecologic oncology, where she contributed to a textbook and served as the education chief resident, creating the curriculum for her residency program.
Outside of work, Dr. Thomas is an avid dog lover and a self-proclaimed “Swiftie” (though she might not tell you that right away). She’s obsessed with her two dogs, Cleopatra (Cleo) and Charles (Charlie), and is known to share photos of them within minutes of meeting someone new. Dr. Thomas also enjoys reading, cycling, Pilates, hiking, and exploring Richmond’s vibrant food, music, and antiquing scenes with her husband, a physician whom she met during their first year of medical school.
Dr. Thomas is thrilled to join Virginia Women’s Center and bring her patient-centered approach to care.
