Carrie Bohmer, PhD
Mental HealthDr. Carrie Bohmer has always been fascinated by human behavior, thought, and emotion—a curiosity that led her to pursue a career in psychology. She is passionate about helping people gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their relationships through collaborative conversations, problem-solving, and compassionate care.
Drawn to women’s health, Dr. Bohmer focuses on how systemic inequities uniquely impact mental health and wellbeing. She is especially passionate about the intersections of mental health and reproductive health, including pregnancy, postpartum, and menopause. With extensive training in perinatal mental health and certification in Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)—a first-line psychotherapy for PTSD—she offers evidence-based, personalized support for her patients. She also has a special interest in sexual and reproductive health, providing sex education and sex therapy in a safe, affirming space.
Dr. Bohmer integrates a multicultural and feminist framework into her practice, aiming to create a therapy space where differences can be discussed and honored. Her role, as she sees it, is to be a grounded and understanding sounding board—someone who helps patients slow down, feel deeply, and live authentically. She fervently hopes her impact reaches beyond individuals, positively influencing families and communities as well.
Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Bohmer has been published in peer-reviewed journals, contributed to textbooks, and serves as a blind peer reviewer for academic journals.
The youngest of six sisters, Dr. Bohmer feels right at home in women’s healthcare. When she’s not with patients, she enjoys hot yoga, crocheting, reading fiction, watching reality TV, and spending quality time with family and friends. She also loves Richmond’s rich diversity and endless opportunities for exploration and connection.
