Obstetrics & Gynecology“I want my patients to feel truly heard when they share their symptoms or concerns and to leave knowing exactly what our next steps are—together as a team.” ~Niurka L. Monteserin, MD, MPH
From a young age, Dr. Niurka Monteserin’s path to medicine seemed almost predestined—at least according to her grandmother, who envisioned her in a white coat long before Dr. Monteserin herself did. While she initially dreamt of becoming a marine biologist, her natural affinity for biology and science gradually drew her towards a career in medicine.
Dr. Monteserin’s educational path took an important turn during her college years when she studied abroad in Denmark and discovered a strong interest in health systems. This curiosity drove her to earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree, focusing on understanding and improving healthcare. However, she soon realized that her true passion was providing care on a more personal level, leading her to medical school and, ultimately, to women’s health.
Choosing obstetrics and gynecology felt like a natural fit for Dr. Monteserin. As the oldest female in her family’s generation, she became the go-to person for her sisters and cousins’ women’s health questions. She takes pride in breaking the stigma around women’s health topics, especially within her Hispanic culture, and strives to provide equitable and comprehensive care to all her patients. Dr. Monteserin believes in making sure her patients feel truly heard and involved in their care, working together as a team to achieve their reproductive goals. She’s excited to build lasting relationships with her patients and offer them compassionate care and guidance through every stage of life.
Dr. Monteserin loves all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology, from robotic surgery to the ongoing care of her pregnant patients. The most rewarding part of her job is the ability to make a difference in her patients’ lives—whether it’s guiding a young teen to womanhood, addressing a health concern, offering reassurance before surgery, or being there for the birth of a child.
Dr. Monteserin’s passion for international health has been a driving force throughout her career. During medical school, she traveled to the Dominican Republic with HOMBRE, a nonprofit organization that provides free medical care to rural communities. This experience was transformative, and she continues to serve on the board of directors for HOMBRE, currently acting as the organization’s secretary. Locally, she volunteers with Sylvia’s Sisters, an organization dedicated to ending period poverty.
Growing up in Miami, Dr. Monteserin didn’t learn English until she started school, deepening her appreciation for the diverse cultures and communities she serves. As a native Spanish speaker, she is eager to help women for whom English is a second language confidently navigate the complexities of women’s healthcare.
When she’s not working, Dr. Monteserin enjoys life fully. Now settled in Richmond, she loves exploring the area, whether it’s a big hike, a beach trip, or spending time on the James River during the summer. She and her fiance recently adopted two kittens. The couple loves traveling, and is planning their next adventure to explore the national parks in Nevada and Arizona. Dr. Monteserin is a huge fan of Taylor Swift and enjoys binge-watching reality TV on Netflix.
Dr. Monteserin is thrilled to be part of the Virginia Women’s Center family and is eager to bring her passion for women’s health to the Midlothian community. Call today to schedule an appointment with Dr. Monteserin!
